Ki

Ki is an energy that yokai possess the ability to produce from their bodies, and manipulate at will with time and training. Ki also functions as the life energy of yokai. Ki can exist in several varieties.

  • normal/base ki
  • fire ki
  • wind ki
  • lightning ki
  • water ki
  • earth ki

Ki can be manipulated through a mystic martial art called "kijutsu" (the art of ki). This martial art involves unleashing ki from the palms, fists, elbows, etc, for concussive, and in rare cases incendiary attacks. When a youkai is low on ki they experience exhaustion and fatigue. These symptoms can be alleviated by consuming food, or ki directly from an external source, though the latter must be consensual unless a special ability is used.

Yokai

Yokai (spirit) is a term applied to beings that appear in Japanese lore, and possess non-human (usually animal) traits including the ability to produce and manipulate ki as well as enhanced strength and speed. Many varieties of yokai exists in a dimension parallel to earth. these yokai and their unique traits include, but are not limited to:

  • Tengu (crow/bird wings)
  • Kappa (humanoid turtle with bowl like indent at the top of the skull)
  • Bakeneko (cat ears, tails, and claws)
  • Kitsune (fox ears and tails
  • Kumo (4 to 8 eyes and the torso is attached to a spider abdomen with eight legs mounted in the front)
  • Tanuki (tails of Japanese raccoon dogs
  • Hebi (scaly skin, bald, snake fangs
  • Inugami (dog tails and ears)

Due to the supernatural appearance of their true forms, and their preference for the human world, most yokai will adopt human disguises by sealing the bulk of their ki away inside their bodies. This allows a yokai to take on a human form that is usually vary attractive and young looking, despite the fact that yokai can live for centuries. Yokai are capable of interspecies breeding, but the mother's species will always decide the offspring's species.

Oni

Oni (ogre) are the result of human yokai hybrids. They begin their life cycles appearing to be human until their yokai powers manifest. These powers will be dangerously strong in terms of the sheer amount of ki inside the body of the oni-to-be. It is unknown how oni transform from half humans into their more recognizable state, but one theory is that it is caused by rage or frustration, as documented half humans have exhibited foul tempers prior to transformation. An oni in its true form will have these traits.

  • Unique horns, usually mounted at the top or front of the skull
  • Green, blue, or red skin
  • Large, muscular build, even on females
  • Shaggy white hair, usually worn long

It is unknown where oni live since they are not often seen in the yokai or human world, even though several transformations have been reported in the last decade alone. One theory holds that the oni live in a second dimension parallel to earth, but no evidence has been shown as of yet.
